Valentine Be Mine Book Review

Although we all love Valentine's Day and DD celebrates it with her class every year by exchanging cards and/or gifts, we actually know very little about this special holiday.

Luckily, with Valentine Be Mine book in hand, we got to learn all about the history of the holiday, how the different practices came about and the different ways we could celebrate it.

Chocolate, flowers, poems, gifts—all of these things are readily associated with Valentine’s Day, the most romantic holiday of the year. But how did this day devoted to the celebration of love come to be? How have the traditions associated with February 14th changed over the years, and how do people in different countries around the world mark the occasion?
In Valentine Be Mine, readers learn all about this special holiday, from its origin in Rome in the first century all the way to the distribution of Valentines among grade school students in classrooms today. A secondary layer of text provides more detailed information encouraging further research and discovery, while the collage-style art gives readers plenty of visual details to explore and uncover.

In addition to providing fascinating facts and stories about this romantic holiday, the book includes Valentine’s Day jokes and step-by-step instructions on how to make your own Valentine Day’s card and tissue paper flowers.
DD, at 6 years old, is able to read this book with some assistance. If you have a child reading at a third grade level, your child should be able to read it without any help. The book starts with the historical background of the holiday, it has short passages discussing the 3 different saints named Valentine. It then goes on to cover the romantic association with the holiday and then the different way we could celebrate it. Include in this book are different crafts your child could do: making a card or tissue flowers.

This is a great book that's great for young elementary students who are interested in learning about Valentine's Day.
