Holland House Cooking Wine Review

I feel like I do more cooking and baking in the month of December than any other months combined. Alright, I am exaggerating, but it honestly feels that way to me. Besides always tiding up the house because we have so many friends visiting, I am constantly baking and cooking for our guests too.

At some point, I was out of ideas of what to cook. It seems that I have been making the same dishes day after day, year after year. So, when I was given the chance to review Holland House Sherry Cooking Wine and White with Lemon Flavor Cooking Wine, I was excited. I was truly looking forward to trying something new.

After receiving the cooking wines, the first thing I did was pull up some recipes online to try out. After trying a couple of recipes, I was impressed by how nice the cooking wines were. The dishes tasted great. With the white cooking wine, I made salmon. It was probably the best salmon dish I ever made.

With the sherry cooking wine, I made a wild rice and ham soup (from a recipe that was emailed to me). My family could not get enough of it, the soup was a huge hit.

Here's the recipe I used:

RECIPE: Wild Rice 'n Ham Soup
4 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup chopped onion
1-1/2 cups sliced fresh mushrooms
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
2 cans (14-1/2 oz. ea.) reduced-sodium chicken broth
1/2 cup Holland House Sherry Cooking Wine
2 cups cooked wild rice
1 cup diced cooked ham
1/2 cup shredded or julienned carrots
1 cup whole milk
2 tablespoons chopped parsley for garnish

Melt butter in a 6-quart pot. Add onion and mushrooms; cook until tender.

Stir in flour and gradually stir in 1 can chicken broth. Add remaining can of broth and sherry cooking wine. Cook, stirring constantly, until mixture comes to a boil and thickens.

Add rice, ham and carrots; cook 10 minutes or until heated through. Reduce heat; stir in milk and simmer 1 minute or until heated through. Serve garnished with parsley.

Makes 4 servings (about 7 cups).

All in all, I liked the cooking wines I received to review and I will be picking up more of their products in the future to try out. I know that my family will love that too :).
