Social Media Marketing For Dummies vs. The Complete Idiot’s Guide For Social Media Marketing Challenge

I was asked to do a comparison review on 2 different books: Social Media Marketing For Dummies and The Complete Idiot’s Guide For Social Media Marketing. To be honest, I didn't think there was much difference between the two brands. In the past I typically pick up whatever is available at the bookstore if I want to learn about a particular subject quickly. When I was approached to write this review, I was told that I should write my true and honest opinion of them, so I began reading them after the books arrived at my home in order to share my views.

First of all, both books were very similar on the topics they covered. Both books discuss the basic ideas of marketing through social media platforms such as facebook and twitter.  Both books also have a lot of pictures. This is important to me because I am a visual learner, it helps me to see images that correlates what each chapter covers. Social Media Marketing For Dummies was published in 2009 while The Complete Idiot’s Guide For Social Media Marketing was published in 2010; what a difference a year makes in social media. Both books cover marketing though MySpace, which has lost much of its audience and the future of MySpace remains to be seen.

As I read through the two books, I must say that I did find The Complete Idiot’s Guide For Social Media Marketing more useful for a few reasons. Social Media Marketing For Dummies, generally speaking, covers each area of Social Media Marketing by offering its history, definitional and an overall view of the topic at hand. Though this information is useful and it does provide a background knowledge needed, after reading each topic, I could not help but think I need to pick a book that covers the topic more in depth. The Complete Idiot’s Guide For Social Media Marketing, on the other hand, has a lot more hands on steps on "how to" put together a social media marketing strategy. For example, the books tells you exactly how to set up a facebook fan page, how to crate a twitter profile and it even has a whole chapter on blogs. Frankly, I found these step by step instructions much more helpful than a gloss over of different topics. I also like that The Complete Idiot’s Guide For Social Media Marketing offers information on applications such as Feedburner and Feedblitz, which were not covered in Social Media Marketing For Dummies.

All in all, I thought that The Complete Idiot’s Guide For Social Media Marketing offers more hands on, ready to use tips and tools that one could use after reading the book. I would recommend The Complete Idiot’s Guide For Social Media Marketing over the Social Media Marketing For Dummies without any hesitation.
