Somethings never change and that's a good thing! My husband and I had been going to Shin Sen Gumi Hakata Rame in Fountain Valley, CA for more than 10 years now and their food is still as great as the first day we tried it. This little ramen restaurant is only large enough to seat about 50 people and it is always busy & packed. So, unless you are eating dinner at 9 PM, be prepared to wait. The wait is always at least 30 minutes long, sometimes up to a hour. Typically we just put our name down and walk around the center while we wait for a table to open up. If you have a large party, then be prepare to wait even longer. Because the place is small, there is really no room for a large table. If you have more than 4 people, there is going to be a extra long wait for you.
There are little tables as well as seats at the ramen bar. We got seated at the bar last time we visited. From the bar, you get a clear view of the guy who makes your ramen. Check out all of the ramen bowls! You can customize your ramen according to your liking. You can request for hard, medium or soft noodles. You can also request for no oil, little or normal amount of oil to be put in your ramen. DH does like care for ginger so he always asked for them to leave that out. I like to add corn to my ramen. The ramen is authentic Japanese ramen. Same yummy stuff you would get if you were to order ramen in Japan.
In addition to ramen (which you must get if you never been there before), they also have other authentic Japanese items. I got some takoyaki to try. It was good, but I don't think I will get it again.
For dessert I got green tea favored creme brulee. It was actually pretty good.
If you are not used to going to Japanese ramen restaurants, I just want to warn you that it is incredibly loud in there. The waiter will take your order and then yell your order to the chef in Japanese. When you are ready to pay, they will also yelled that you have finished your meal. On your way out, all of the employees will yell farewell in Japanese and bow to you to thank you for your business as you head out. There is a lot of yelling in the place, but we really like the upbeat energy. The service is always awesome and the food is wonderful. The only downside is that because it is a small place, the wait for a table and for your food is very long. So, go with someone who likes to have conversations with you and don't mind the wait! Also, I don't recommend bringing your kids. The place is small, too small for you to park your stroller. Plus the wait for a table is long. Most of the little ones wouldn't have enough patience for the long wait.
I give the place 4 out 5 cupcakes for its food! Worth the wait for some authentic Japanese ramen!
