I was contacted by The Pocket Referee to review their product. When the company contacted me, I checked out its website and after reading about their product, my first thought was, "What a great idea, why didn't I think of that?!" Since there is such a large age gap between DD and baby G, there is no fighting or arguing between the 2 of them yet. Because baby G has such an easy going personality, I imagine that even when he is older, he will likely just let his big sister do whatever she wants to do. However, I still find this product to be super helpful when DD has playdates with her friends.
I can not even begin to tell you how often the kids fight over a particular toy. For some reason, whenever we have a playdate, as soon as one of the kids show real interest in a toy, then suddenly all of the other kids want to play with the same thing. Most of the time, the moms would settle the dispute and ask the kids to take terms to play with the toy. Now that the kids are older, we would ask them to work things out among themselves, but these preschoolers are too emotional to speak to one another calmly or share nicely all of the time. These situations are what makes the pocket referee so helpful.
The coin holder could either get her way when a conflict comes up but then must pass the coin to the other party or if she would rather keep the coin, she could use it for later conflict . With the help of the coin referee, when we have playdates, we don't need to intervene constantly. We also don't need to constantly say things like, " Whose turn is it?" "Who had the toy first?" "You need to learn how to share." The pocket referee has shown the kids how to resolve conflicts without our assistance, they also learned to make better choices and understand that some battles just aren't worth fighting.
If you have more than 2 kids, I would recommend picking up more pocket referee coins. Once we had playdates for 4 preschoolers and the pocket referee actually became the thing they fought over. I tried to give them another coin, but it did not help. Because then there was an argument among them that one coin was better and more special than the other one.
All in all, we like the pocket referee and we think it is a great idea. But, we also recommend that you have enough coins for the number of kids you have.
Many thanks to The Pocket Referee. The company has generously offered 1 special edition of The Pocket Referee as a giveaway prize to one of my lucky readers (US residents only please).
