I am always on the look out for great fun games to play with the kids. DD really enjoys playing different board games with us and her friends, but I notice that after a few use the games piece have started falling apart. Preschoolers like DD and her friends don't seem to be very gentle with the game pieces, so if they are made of cardboard, they are not going to last too long. That is why I was especially in love with Pengoloo from Blue Orange.
My first impression of Pengoloo when I opened the box was how nicely made the game pieces are. Each wooden piece is painted and super adorable. This was definitely a board game that gets kids excited before we even began to play.
Pengoloo is created for kids age 4 and up, but after trying it, I think that you could play this game with kids as young as 3 years old. The game comes with 12 penguins, 12 colored eggs, 4 Iceberg scoring boards, and 2 colored dice. To start the game, you place the eggs inside the penguins and each person gets a scoring board. Each player gets a turn rolling at the color dice. Depending the colors you get, you would pick up the penguin to find the colored eggs inside. You have 2 chance, if you get the right egg color, then you get to keep the egg and the penguin on your score board. The first person who collects 6 penguins wins. This is a great game in turns of helping your kids develop memory skills. In addition to the basic method of playing I described, there are other ways to play as well. For older kids, the player could take another player's colored egg (hidden under the penguin) from their score board if they could correctly identified the right color -- when they happen to roll that color on the dice. With the younger kids, I would actually allow the kids to try 4 times (instead of 2 times) to make it easier for them. The nice thing about this game is that you could change the rules according to the kids' age to make it either easier or harder for them.
Each game lasts between 10 to 15 minutes-- just perfect length of time for their attention span. The kids had a blast with playing with game. The pieces are very cute so they really like that. They also have a lot of fun trying to remember the colors too.
To purchase this game, please visit Blue Orange website to locate a retail store near you. If you would like to purchase it online, it is $24.99 on Amazon.com (but on sale at this time for $18.85). http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Orange-4102593-Pengoloo/dp/B0014BDYDE. For the quality you get and the amount of fun the kids have playing this board game, it is well worth the price. I would recommend this game to help keep your kids entertained this summer without any hesitation!
