Epson Stylus NX420 all-in-one Printer Review & Giveaway (ENDED)

We have owned several Epson printers in the past and we thought they were really great. As such, when we were given the chance to review the newest Epson Printer Stylus NX 420, we were excited. Although we were very happy with our old Epson printer, we really wanted to get something that has wireless option. The new printer could not have come at a better time for us. The company was very generous. Not only did we receive a printer to review, we also got extra ink cartridges, printer papers as well as photo papers to test out the different functions. DH was the one who set it up as well as tested out the different functions, so here's his review.

I should preface this by saying that I'm not any kind of hardware nut or printer expert - though I've bought, returned, worn out, and broken my fair share of them over the years - so this'll definitely be a layman's review. If you want to know about exact ISO print speeds and optimum dpi values and DX3 print heads, sorry, I won't be going into that.

I can, however, give my impressions of Epson's NX420 as a fairly typical family guy.

In short? It's awesome. -Especially- for the price.

It's about the same size as other similar units, sleek and nice looking, easy to clean off (dust, greasy kid-stuff, whatever), and with a collapsible paper support and output tray that I don't need to worry about breaking every time I pop them in or out.

The wireless-N connection was cake to set up: a few minutes to install Epson's included software on our desktop PC, turned the printer on, selected our home's network (from the top of a list containing quite a few of our neighbor's networks, heh), entered our network password into the printer and BAM, finished and printing wirelessly. My wife then installed the software on her laptop and was printing from the master bedroom in no time. Nice!

It can print straight from SD memory cards, too, using an easily-accessible card slot and a tiny LCD screen on the printer body... you don't even need a computer.

I took a little time to run it through its printing, scanning, and copying paces and it never disappointed, quickly printing beautiful black & white and color documents and photos from electronic files, from the memory card, from copies, from scans, the works. The little LCD screen makes this stuff easier, too - you can dictate how many copies you want and enlarge or reduce them with a touch, right at the machine. You can handle printed documents and photos right away, too... I tried to smudge a glossy print as it popped out to no avail. You could even lick the photo and the color will stay. But it tastes gross, so don't. I mean, not that I did, or anything. That'd be silly, come on. Ahem. Moving on.

It's got the usual wide range of settings (scan quality, print quality, paper type, etc.) for handling anything from quick email printouts to professional presentations, as well as photo restoration functionality in the scanning software that works as well as anything I've ever used (sometimes it's cool when your little girl's birthday pictures give her Crimson Death Beam eyes, but yeah, you usually want to get rid of that).

Oh, and while it's not like the NX420 will single-handedly save the planet or anything, it does support (manual) two-sided printing for saving paper and is "designed to be recycled." Huh? No kidding, seriously. You can read all about it on Epson's site. Pretty cool.

So to wrap up... the Stylus NX420 is a great little wireless all-in-one and an amazing value for its price. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone. Nice work, Epson!
