Wooohooo to recycling

I took some cans and bottles to the recycling center down the street from our house today. I am not sure how long it has been since my last trip to the recycling center. But it has been so long that I got $15.15 back from my recycling. Wooohooo!

The money went stright to DD's saving's account-- this was why we decided to do our own recycling instead of putting them in recycling bins for the city to take away.

Anyhow, I am just excited that DD is $15.15 richer today. Yay!

Oven Mitts-- My newest creations

I made some oven mitts yesterday. It was my first time making oven mitts, so I am super happy with the way they turned out ;).

I brought some oven mitts from a mommy's boutique I attended. It was a set of 2 for $10. The oven mitts were really cute, but there were a couple of things I did not like about it. First, the oven mitts were not lined on the inside. Second, the fabric used was not very good fabric. After one wash in the wash machine, the oven mitts looked like they have been used for ages. Because I wash the oven mitts once a week (they get very icky), I need them to be durable.

Anyhow, I decided to make my own using some nice fabrics I brought. Of course, cheaper fabrics could be purchased at Joann's for about $4 per yard. But, I wanted to use fabrics I really like (since I do use oven mitts almost daily), so I ended up using fabrics that were $8.99 a yard. The material used for oven mitts ended up costing about $12 for a set of 2 mitts. It was more expensive than the oven mitts I brought (not to mention the time it took me to make them), but I am sooo happy with the way they look and turned out, I think I am going to make them as gifts for birthdays and holidays this year.

Chocolate Candy Oven Mitts... Yummy! I made them so that both sides look the same. I forgot to take photo that shows inside of the oven mitts. The fabric I used for the inside was green fabric with pink polk dots.

This was the second set I made for my self. I am calling them Brown Floral Oven Mitts.

This is what the other side of the oven mitts look like :).

After making 4 oven mitts for myself, I had just enough insulated material (I brought 1 yard of it at the fabric shop), to make 2 small oven mitts for DD.

You can see how small DD's oven mitts are next to mine.

Cinnamon Rolls

I have been making homemade cinnamon rolls for us. We usually eat them as dessert after dinner. Each time I make a batch, I divided them into 2 containers so I can bake 1 set right away and the other set gets stored in the freezer until I am ready to bake them. This works out great because I can pull them out of freezer and bake them for us in 30 minutes. Yummy. Also, there is no way the 3 of us can eat that much cinnamon rolls. LOL!

Anyhow, this is what they looked like before I bake them. I make the dough myself and then roll them up in butter, cinnamon and brown sugar.

They taste pretty good for homemade cinnamon rolls, plus it is saving us a lot of money to make them instead of buying them from the stores.

Hair bows I made

I made these for a special order right before Christmas. It was a christmas gift for someone's girl friend. The person sent me photos of their WOW characters and I made the bottlecaps using the images he sent me. I was very happy with the way they turned out :).

Hmmmm... yeah... great start on a new week

I was woken up by a loud noise this morning. The noise was followed with DD's cries. I ran into DD's room and found her window shutter on the floor of her room (in pieces). Apparently it just fell off??? How does that even happen?

DD was pretty upset by it. I picked up all of the little pieces and left them in her room. It is beyond repair. But I am not sure what we need to do now. What a great way to start the week....

(Just waiting for more bad things to happen.....)

What a week...

Not such a great week in our family. DD has been sick over a week now, and of course, she passed her cold to me. I ended up getting really sick on last Friday and lost my voice completely. I was so glad that today (Monday) is a holiday because there is no way I could teach my class without a voice. DH had to deal with DD and I the whole weekend. We have been sick and also cranky & we gave him lots of attitude. Poor daddy!

Oh, yeah. DH hurt him hand Friday night and so he can't use his hand at all, which also means that he can't play his beloved online games. He was very sad. Then on Sunday morning, while I was cooking I dropped a cup on my toe and I was bleeding after that.

Yeah, this past week has been a week of sickness and minor disasters for us. Glad we are starting a new week. Pheeeww!

Popover--- Approved by DD

I made some popovers for lunch today and it was a huge hit with DD. It was very easy to make (beginning to end takes about 20 minutes).

You need:

*1 cup of milk (at room temperature)
*2 eggs (at room temperature)
*3/4 cup of all purpose flour
* 1/2 tsp of salt
* 1/2 tsp of dried basil (optional)
* 1/2 tsp of dried rosemary (optional)
* 3 tablespoons of butter

Heat oven to 425 degrees. Mix everything together (expect for the butter). In a non-stick muffin pan, cut butter in 12 chucks and place them in the muffin pan. Put in oven for about 2 minutes so that the butter is melted. Pull muffin pan out and then pour your mixture into the muffin pan. Put muffin pan back into oven for about 14 minutes. Do not open the oven during this time.

DD loves this just on its own. DH thought it would be great as a part breakfast meal. Next time I think I am going to add cheese to it and see how that goes.

Yummy pizza-- not delivery

Actually we haven't had delivery pizza for a long time now. A few months ago, I started buying Boboli pizza crust from the supermarket after my friend Nancy introduced me to it at her home. I thought it tasted way better than Pizza Hut pizzas, so I wrote to Boboli and got some coupons in the mail & that's how we eat pizza at home. But, boboli pizza crust is not cheap. For the 3 of us, we need 1 large crust and that's $5. So, I thought I should make my own. Tonight, I made my own pizza crust and it turned out yummy. We are never going to buy pizza crust or order Pizza Hut again (well, at least not in the US. I can't resist Octopus Pizza from Pizza Hut in Taiwan).

Anyhow, here is the receipe I used for my pizza crust. DH said that it was the best pizza he ever had (of course he had to say that since he is my husband after all, LOL). Though I have to admit, I was very happy with how it turned out.

The most expensive part of my homemade pizza was actually the beer. I brough the cheapest beer I could find in the supermarket. 6 bottles for $4.99. I used half of the pizza dough I made for my pizza (on half of a cookie sheet) and that was enough to feed me, DH and DD. There was even enough leftover for DH to take for lunch tomorrow. The cost to make a whole cookie sheet of pizza was about $2.50 (with toppings) and I think that would have been enough to feed 4 adults.

You need:
1 cup flat beer
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 1/4 teaspoons yeast
1 teaspoon of basil
4 cloves of garlic (we love garic, so I use 4, if you don't like garic much, you can just use 2 cloves).

To make:
Put beer, butter, sugar, salt, flour, and yeast in a bread machine in the order recommended by the manufacturer. Select Dough setting, and press Start.
(If you don't have a bread machine, dissolve the yeast in beer in a large bowl and then mix everything together. Knead the dough into a large ball, using your hands dusted lightly with flour. Put in a bowl, cover and let rise in a warm place about 1 hour, or until doubled in size. Then pick up with rolling out the dough.)

Remove dough from bread machine when cycle is complete. Roll or press dough to cover a prepared pizza pan. Brush lightly with olive oil. Cover and let stand 15 minutes.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees

Spread sauce and toppings on top of dough. Bake until crust is lightly brown and crispy on the outside, about 24 minutes.
